Birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, honeymoons, Mother’s Day. The celebrations that come around every year and the ones that happen once in a lifetime. Each time, we want to make it as special and memorable as the last, and each time the pressure of “what do I get them this time” or “how do I make this special” creeps in.
In the modern material world where we’re surrounded by “stuff”, the era of the physical gift has been shifting. Buying something to be admired for a week and then folded into a drawer is no longer the instinct it once was. It seems we’re beginning to realise that people don’t remember the thing, they remember the feeling that creates memories that get talked about years later, when you’re together telling stories, sharing photos, pinpointing moments, saying “remember when we…”.
Objects fade, moments compound
The name for this in psychology is “hedonic adaptation”. We adjust to things quickly, whether it’s a new bag, a new watch, even a new car eventually becomes part of the furniture of daily life. Researchers have found that experiential purchases hold their value in a way material ones simply don’t. We can’t compare an experience to what we could have bought instead, because there’s no like-for-like alternative sitting in a shop window to measure it against. Good memories don’t have a resale value, they just get better with age. Retold and slightly embellished at dinner tables, referenced in in-jokes and folded into the story of a relationship rather than the inventory of its possessions.
So here’s our suggestions to help you collect memories for this year’s birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, honeymoons, Valentine’s and Galentine’s, and any other declaration of love you’re looking to celebrate.
1. A private sauna and spa evening
Saunas are trending, and for good reason. Nights out drinking followed by a 48-hour hangover are being replaced by a rejuvenating afternoon of switching between hot and cold. A private sauna session and cold therapy in the outdoor shower with your favourite person, followed by a full body massage where you’re given the permission to completely surrender; that sounds like a pretty special way to celebrate an occasion or give your Mum the break she deserves.
2. A make-your-own pizza night
Not every celebration needs to be quiet and contemplative, sometimes it’s fun to plan to make a mess. Get yourself some dough bases, a spread of toppings, have your wood-fired pizza oven to hand, and get set up to argue about whether or not pineapple belongs on a pizza. The best thing about this one is after you’ve got flour on your faces and on the floor, you get to eat your delicious creations.
3. A picnic with a view
Simple but effective, and the Chilterns has the perfect spot. Coombe Hill, above Great Missenden, has one of the best panoramas in the county and, depending on your mood, you can make the walk shorter or longer to reach the monument at the top. Pack a blanket, a good loaf of bread, a bottle of something delicious and some classic picky bits, and get set up to enjoy the view. It costs nothing beyond the food, but low-key effort is always appreciated by your person.
4. A weekend away, just far enough to feel like an escape
The shift towards staycations has been rising as wasting a full day getting to your location feels like an unnecessary step to the reset we’re seeking. It turns out we can change our environment and enter full retreat mode, with it still being close enough that nobody has to burn days of annual leave for travelling. Just 45 minutes to an hour from London is a sweet spot that means you can make the most of your days off and maximise your time for rest. A private cabin or hut beats a hotel room and gives you the space to roam, perhaps with your own outdoor bath, fire pit and garden like at The Wild Root.
5. A vineyard tour and tasting in the Chilterns
The Chilterns’ chalky soil has made it one of England’s better sparkling wine regions, and a handful of vineyards around the Hambleden Valley run tours and tastings that make for a beautiful afternoon out walking the vines, learning how English sparkling wine is actually made, then sitting down to taste the results. It’s a thoughtful gift for the person who’d rather learn something than receive something, and it easily pairs with a night away nearby.
Okay, a confession
Truth is, all five of these are on offer at The Wild Root. A weekend cabin escape, a private sauna session included in every stay with a spa room on site, and a pizza night with ingredients provided and your own wood-fired pizza. Plus Coombe Hill and wine country is just down the road. It turns out a stay at The Wild Root in the Buckinghamshire Chilterns is the perfect gift for any and all occasions. We crafted everything to be considered and intentional, and our optional thoughtful extras mean you won’t have to think about a thing. And we don’t mind if you take all the credit.
A gift that outlasts the occasion
But the point is that the best gifts, wherever you find them, tend to have the same shape: something to do together, somewhere all the noise can be turned off. What makes a celebration special is rarely the setting alone, but the absence of everything that normally competes for attention: the chores, errands, notifications. What’s left in that gap is just your favourite people and full permission to be present with them.
