The people behind the cabins
We’re Jess & Jamie.
The Wild Root began with us, Jess and Jamie — and, rather less romantically, a building site in London.
We met at One Blackfriars. Jess was working on the client side for St George; Jamie was a contracts manager for one of the decorating contractors. We worked together for a couple of years before getting together in May 2019.
London was home: first Dalston, then Hackney Downs. We were both working in construction, with Jess also fitting a part-time interior design course around her day job.
A little closer to home
Back to Buckinghamshire.
After years living and working in London, surrounded by the pace and pressure of everyday life, we found ourselves drawn to a quieter way of living. Our mornings sound a little different now. More birdsong, fewer sirens.
For Jess, Buckinghamshire meant coming home. Her family live nearby, and she went to school less than ten minutes from The Wild Root. For Jamie, after ten years in London, this was a new home.
The Chilterns offer a quiet beauty that reveals itself slowly. Rolling countryside, winding footpaths, grazing animals, hidden pubs and farm shops. Open skies, slower mornings and the kind of calm that isn’t far away, just often overlooked.
A change of plan
Creating The Wild Root.
After five years at St George, Jess left to establish a family property development business. The Wild Root grew out of that next chapter, bringing together our experience in construction, project delivery and interiors.
There had been a plan to go travelling. Somewhere along the way, that became getting a Labrador and starting a cabin business instead.
We’d often felt there was a gap between a beautiful hotel stay and a countryside escape. We wanted to bring hotel-level comfort and thoughtful design into the countryside, and create somewhere that encourages connection over the simple things.
Lighting a fire. Cooking together in a new place. Finding a local pub. Making a coffee and actually having time to sit and enjoy it.
We intentionally kept it small, just three cabins, so the experience could stay personal. Rise, Dusk and Ember welcomed their first guests on 12 June 2026.
These days
Jess, Jamie & Rodney.
Jess now runs The Wild Root full-time. Jamie continues in his London job during the week and spends weekends at The Wild Root. A music lover, he also gets behind the decks whenever he has the chance.
Rodney, our black Labrador, would also like a mention. He’s very much behind the scenes, as the cabins aren’t dog-friendly, however persuasive he thinks he is.
The Wild Root isn’t about escaping to somewhere far away. It’s about discovering what’s already here.
